Worms, viruses, spam – you may have taken steps to protect your personal computer and email from these problems. The latest plague for Internet users is spyware, the name for applications that “spy” on your online actions.
Spyware is software that gathers user information through your Internet connection and forwards it to someone else. It's usually used for advertising purposes, so the recipient can send you ads or pop-ups. Most spyware is legitimate, and you usually – unknowingly – allow it to be installed on your computer when you download freeware or shareware or browse certain websites.
Although spyware usually results in a lot of unwanted advertising, there can be dangers. Some versions, which are not legitimate, install themselves without your knowledge, and can gather information about passwords and credit cards by monitoring your keystrokes and then forward that information to a third party, potentially leading to financial fraud or identity theft.

You can help protect yourself against spyware by using an Internet firewall, downloading the latest security updates and using up-to-date antivirus software. There are also applications available to detect, remove and/or block spyware, but be sure you are using a reputable product or you could end up with a bigger spyware problem.
